It's easy to neglect your garage. Figuratively speaking, we don't usually see our garage as part of our home. We go to painstaking lengths to ensure our living areas are clean and tidy, but our garages are often put in the "I'll get around to it" category. Cleaning your garage may not seem like a priority, but neglecting this area of the house can become a much more serious issue the longer you wait. What's more, a messy garage can be a major fire hazard.
Clearing the Clutter
A garage seem to be the part of our home where unused things go to die. All too often do we end up using our garage as a place to store a few things we no longer use, but think we may one day need. Before we know it, several years fly by and those few things become veritable mountains of clutter. When every nook and cranny is full to the brim, even thinking about a clean-up can take the wind out of our sails.
Here's How You Start
The golden rule of clearing away clutter is – if you haven't used it in over a year, you most likely will never use it again. In other words, get rid of it. When you're done separating everything into "keeping" and "not keeping" piles, sort the things you intend to keep into boxes or containers. You can usually find inexpensive storage containers for this purpose at your local Walmart. These containers or boxes can be labelled so you can easily retrieve your items in case you ever do need them. Many are also stackable, so you can relegate them to a corner instead of spreading them all over your garage.
The Benefits of an Organized Garage
Now that you have cleaned out your garage and neatly organized everything, you will begin to appreciate what a fabulous thing you have accomplished. Firstly, getting your car in an out will be much easier. Let's face it... what's the point of having a garage if you end up parking your car outside? Another benefit is that getting in and out of your car will be much easier, and you won't have to squeeze your way through the mountains of garbage. But most important of all, once you get your garage clean and tidy, keeping it this way will be a breeze. As is the case with any effort, it's the first step that's the hardest.
A Clear Space Means Peace of Mind
Like the rest of your home, keeping your garage clean and clear of clutter will create an atmosphere of order. Once you're done you may even become inspired to clean the rest of your house.
