Testing the opener confirmed that the noise was coming from inside the engine, and we went over the external hardware to make sure there was no outside cause. We then looked inside of the opener and found the drive chain partly tangled around the rim of its spool. The chain was not yet damaged, so we removed and respooled it without needing to replace any parts. We then straightened the spool and tightened it in place to keep this from happening again.
